Itinerary Overview
- Day 1: Fly into Cancun → base in Puerto Morelos or Tulum (rest day, local food)
- Day 2: Coba ruins + cenotes day trip (Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha, Multum-Ha nearby)
- Day 3: Sian Ka’an or Akumal beach (sea turtles, rays, snorkeling)
- Day 4: Transfer to Valladolid + afternoon at Chichen Itza (go early to beat heat)
- Day 5: Valladolid slower day — Ria Lagartos flamingo reserve if energy allows
- Day 6: Transfer to Merida, settle in
- Day 7: Cuzama cenotes or Uxmal + Grutas de Calcehtok
Family Pacing Rules
- One main activity per day is enough — two ruins in a row break small kids.
- Start Chichen Itza before 9am to get ahead of tour buses and heat.
- Valladolid makes a better base than Cancun for the interior — we found our best AirBnB of the entire trip there.
- Pair every hard-sun day with a cenote or pool afternoon.
Budget Notes
- Car rental gives flexibility and often lowers day-trip costs.
- Food outside top tourist streets is much better value.
- Some ruins add multiple ticket components; verify full price in advance.
