We used these habits during our 5-week Adelaide-to-Sydney campervan stretch and refined them after other camping nights where temperature and setup mistakes cost us sleep.
Our Basic Sleep Layout
- Keep each child in a consistent sleep spot every night. This reduced bedtime friction quickly.
- Use warm-to-cool layering instead of one heavy blanket so you can adapt through the night.
- Store night essentials in one fixed compartment (water, meds, spare layers, lights).
Cold-Night Strategy
- Check forecast before sunset and prep layers early.
- Dry clothes and socks before bedtime if possible.
- Never trust average temperatures alone. We learned this during an unexpectedly cold 6C camping night in Florida.
Morning Reset Routine
- Pack bedding in the same order each day so setup stays fast.
- Assign one kid-friendly task per child to avoid one-parent overload.
- Keep breakfast tools easy to access; calm mornings made our driving days noticeably better.
