This checklist is built from what we actually packed for our 6.5-month trip and what we later learned on beach, altitude, and road-trip legs.
Quick Takeaway: Less is Always More
Our 6.5-month journey in 2015-2016 took us from Cyprus to Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Hawaii, and Mexico. Along the way we learned that the best approach is to pack minimally for the trip type you are on, rather than hauling one massive "adventure suitcase" that tries to cover everything. Below are the skeleton lists that worked for us.
City-Focused Trips
- Keep footwear minimal. We repeatedly found shoes are the fastest way to overpack.
- Use one compact daypack setup for transit and city walking.
- Carry a real meds core (we traveled with practical essentials, not just basic plasters).
Beach and Snorkeling Trips
- Mask/fins/snorkel for all if snorkeling is a real priority (this was part of our core packing list).
- Beach shoes for kids to avoid cuts on rocky or coral entries.
- Quick-dry clothing plus simple drying setup. We relied heavily on clothesline-style drying.
Trekking and Altitude Trips
- Layering system for everyone; altitude and mountain weather changed faster than we expected.
- Hydration setup kids can manage without constant help.
- Buffer days are non-negotiable if altitude is involved.
Campervan and Camping Trips
- Sleep kit first: we have had unexpectedly cold nights (including 6°C in Florida) and poor sleep affects every day after.
