Important context: this is a planning adaptation from our documented November route (Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta). We have also visited Thailand in July (without kids), in February (with only Noah, before Vitus was born), and in December (when Vitus was 3 months old), but those early trips are not documented on this blog.
Why January Can Work (Based On Our Route)
- Our Koh Lanta segment worked well for snorkeling and beach recovery in November, and January is often at least as practical for that same setup.
- In Chiang Mai, we found activity-heavy days (zip-lining and a 2-day trek) manageable with kids when mornings were used well.
- Kanchanaburi was one of our best value stops for food and easy family pacing, which still fits as a first stop before heading north or south.
What We Would Adjust In January
- In our experience, it is almost always possible to find accommodation in Thailand without booking far in advance if you stay flexible and ask around for local options and deals.
- The main exception has been around New Year, which is the only period where we have had real difficulty finding good accommodation.
- Keep our same transfer logic: every major move (Kanchanaburi to Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai to beach base) costs a full family day.
- Protect the first 2-3 days from overplanning; this was important for us with kids and jet lag.
Suggested 2-Week Split (Adapted From Our 4-Week Trip)
- Days 1-4: Kanchanaburi for easy start, food value, and low-pressure family days.
- Days 5-9: Chiang Mai for activity days (zip-lining, trekking, cooking style days).
- Days 10-14: Koh Lanta area for snorkeling and slower beach recovery days.
